GH Phipps Construction Companies’ Projects Receive 4 Gold Hard Hat Awards

Greenwood Village, Colo.,October 7, 2010 — McGraw Hill just announced it’s Gold Hard Hat Awards “Best Projects of 2010 From Colorado & The Plains”.  The competition evaluates projects completed by firms in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, North and South Dakota. Judging is done by a panel of industry experts.

Denver Botanic Gardens GreenhouseThe Denver Botanic Gardens received two Gold Hard Hat awards, one for Best Overall Project of 2010 and the other for Outstanding Cultural Project.  “Needless to say, GH Phipps couldn’t be prouder to have been a partner in the transformation of one of Denver’s cultural icons,” said Kurt Klanderud, President of GH Phipps Construction.  GH Phipps has been honored to help reshape several main areas in the gardens including The Visitors Center and Welcome Garden consisting of admissions and gift shop, a new parking structure, the Mordecai Children’s Garden on the top level of the parking structure and the Greenhouses project including a horticulture complex attached to the Conservatory.

Another Gold Outstanding Healthcare Project was awarded to Denver Health & Hospital’s Core remodels. Twenty-five percent of Denver residents or approximately 150,000 individuals receive their health care at Denver Health. Denver Health has had to remodel to keep up with the growing population and its ever changing health care needs. With such a critical resource to the community, remodels could not interfere with 24-hour services provided by the hospital.  The award encompasses the work GH Phipps recently completed including remodeling the emergency department and reception, lower kitchen and cafeteria and the addition of a new pediatric emergency department.

The Student Housing Village at Colorado State University-Pueblo received a Gold for Outstanding Higher Education/Research Project.  This project addresses the University’s need for additional housing for increasing enrollments. GH Phipps completed the two mid-rise buildings built on four levels with configurations of 1-, 2- and 4-bed dormitory rooms. The Housing Village includes parking, recreational fields and IT-equipped classrooms and study lounges. Each has LEEDTM Sustainable Gold certification pending.

The Bronze Hard Hat Outstanding Architectural Design was awarded to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Science & Engineering Building. This LEED Gold certified building houses classrooms, laboratories, offices and public spaces. While the building will function as a hub for science and engineering, it certainly isn’t lacking in aesthetic appeal. It’s a beautiful brick building with a lot of bright, well-lit spaces and an unobstructed west-elevation view of Pikes Peak from the third-floor. The main lobby is accented by a 250 pound pendulum with an artistic/mosaic installation at the base. The building’s unique design and layout are also intended to encourage communication, collaboration, and opportunities for innovative teaching.

Congratulations to all of the teams involved in these projects.
